A speech by Andy Haldane, chief economist at the Bank of England (BoE), questions the role of monetary authorities in tackling inequality. QE held by numerous central banks with the aim of cushioning the economy had had a perverse effect: a rise in inequality. The speech provides arguments to defend QE gains over income distribution loss. In the future, the BoE might be more prepared to fight against inequality with new tools such macroprudential policies.
